The College of Comparative Law hosted the Second International Conference on Comparative Law and Global Common Law on September 27-28. This year's theme was "Asia in the 21st Century". Related to this theme and coinciding with the conference was the Inaugural Meeting of the Asia Academy of Comparative Law.
This conference brought together outstanding academics, university leaders, law school deans and leaders of international organisations involved in promoting the harmonisation of global laws.
According to Dean Gao Xiang "The conference was a major success with all of the attendees expressing their delight with the quality of papers presented, the depth of discussion and the outstanding organisation provided by the administrative support team and faculty of CUPL's College of Comparative Law."
Leaders of the new academy are LIU Yang, Executive Vice President of the China Law Society (Honorary President); JIANG Ping, Tenured Professor & Former President, China University of Political Science and Law (President); CHENG Chia-Jui, Secretary-General, Asian Academy of International Law, Professor & Former Dean, School of Law, Soochow University (Secretary-General of Curatorium); and Prof. GAO Xiang, Dean, College of Comparative Law (Secretary General of Administrative Council).
The new Asian Academy has among its goals to:
1) Promote greater knowledge and understanding among Asian countries and between Asian countries and the global community;
2) Pursue the scientific purpose of seeking universal legal truths and the harmonisation of legal rules—a global common law-- by identifying the legal traditions, values and principles which endure and abide, and show us the best way forward to a sustainable future;
3) Encourage support for the rule of law;
4) Advance the profession of law and help legal practitioners to work in a global village and information age.
Involved in the Conference and supporting the establishment of the Asia Academy were university presidents and vice-Chancellors, leaders of the profession, international organizations, distinguished law deans, law professors and foreign experts from numerous countries including: Germany, UK, US, Greece, Russia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Italy, France and Switzerland.
