In order to help students improve the ability to write papers and better their preparation for dissertation, the College held a lecture on the Norms of Dissertation Writing on Xueyuanlu Campus on the afternoon of 21 Nov, 2023.
The lecture was given by Prof. Feng Kai, Director of the China-America Law Institute of the College as well as supervisor to doctoral students. This year's graduating students and students of different entering years attended the lecture.
Starting with the abstract and key words of the dissertation, Feng Kai emphasised the key problems in the abstract writing, and enumerated the mistakes that the students are easy to step into in this part. In response to the mistakes often made by students in their thesis writing, Feng said that the thesis topics should be concise and appropriate, and should not exceed the 15-character limit, in which student should try not to attach subheadings.
Then, she explained in detail the key issues of 'problem consciousness', such as the construction of thesis framework, logical conception and academic thought consistency. She pointed out that the theme of the thesis writing research must be 'problems' and students should always remember "to raise problems, analyse problems and solve problems" while avoiding major defects like an unclear core concept definition. She asked students to learn to come up with new solutions to problems based on sound evidence.
Feng encouraged students to strengthen their autonomy, pay attention to time management and improve their 'executive ability' in the process of writing their dissertations. Finally, she wished the students to write a standard graduate thesis and graduate successfully.
The content of this lecture was substantial and practical. It explained in detail the difficulties and challenges students may face in the future, fully answered the students' questions in the paper writing. It provided the audiences with strong instruction for thesis writing and was well-received.
