The College launched a series of activities to welcome year 2020 entering students on 8-10 Sept, 2020. In light of the actual situation of the University and the College as well as in accordance with the requirements of pandemic prevention and control, the College carried out an orientation week to welcome new students, including the enrollment, the opening ceremony & the teacher-student meeting, the orientation for new students, the lecture of mental health and the fresh and senior student meeting.
Under the leadership of the administrative office, the staff of the College Student Union set up 'one-stop' orientation booths in the hall of the ground floor of the Research Building on 8 September, organising the new students to complete the enrollment process in an orderly manner in accordance with steps including ID verification, materials receiving and materials distribution in two booths. This year, affected by Covid-19, in order to avoid the gathering of crowds, the procedures of enrollment were simplified.
The Opening Ceremony for Year 2020 Entering Students of the College was held in the Auditorium of the Research Building on the morning of 9 September. Members of the college leadership team, the entire faculty in Beijing, student representatives, as well as all the class of 2020 freshmen attended the meeting. Chair of the College Council Wang Fang presided over the ceremony.
At the ceremony, A/Prof. Chi Ying, as the teacher's representative, first gave a speech. She extended warm welcome and congratulations to the new students, and then put forward valuable advice in study, life and social communication to the students.
On behalf of the class of 2019, student Ye Yuyan expressed her expectations for the new students and shared her feelings and experiences during the postgraduate study period with her coursemates. Later, on behalf of the Class 2020, new student Qiu Jinming expressed his yearning for postgraduate study, hoping to be a professional lawyer, an amateur and a caring person in the postgraduate stage, and encouraged all the new students.
Finally, Dean of the College Prof. Xie Zhiyong delivered a speech. He started from the content of President Xi Jingping’s talk when he visited the CUPL, put forward two hopes for the new students to pass through the postgraduate stage. He hoped that they would be a decent person, steadfast in their studies and strictly abide by the bottom line of academic integrity, and also hoped the students to practice the University's motto of "keep integrity and law in mind and studying for the people, developing moral education, mastering the law, looking for truth and serving for the public" that they could firm confidence, take responsibility, unite people and revitalize China.
After the ceremony, the college held a meeting between teachers and new students. Wang Fang briefed the new students on the history, the structure and the leadership and the main heads of each institute of the College. Following this, all teaching faculty members gave a brief self-introduction to the students. Each institute then organised educational activities for their students and introduced the characteristics of the institutes in detail. The two parties got familiar with each other during the Q&A section.
On that afternoon, the College held an orientation for new students in lecture room U201 of the Research Building. Wang Fang, Director of the Administrative Office Liu Ming, Deputy Director Li Li, Student Tutor Yang Mingquan and all the new students attended the meeting. The meeting was moderated by Liu Ming.
At the meeting, Wang Fang put forward four requirements to the students, to strictly compliant with the University's epidemic prevention and control requirements and checking in regularly, to pay attention to the key points campus security including students' clothing, food, housing, transportation and online fraud, and to learn how to behave socially and maintain a good teacher-student relationship.
Subsequently, Li Li introduced the College's international programmes with the US, Germany, Australia and other countries as well as the requirements for attending international exchanges. Then, Liu Ming introduced in detail the College's training scheme, module selection of, supervisor choosing, German exchange programme and other specific work. Finally, Yang Mingquan presented a detailed explanation on student work including scholarship, employment and Party affairs.
On the morning of 10 September, A/Prof. Xu Jingjing from the Mental Health Education and Consultation Centre of the CUPL was invited as the keynote speaker to give a lecture on the First Class of New Students: Psychological Adjustment and Adaptation in the New Term. Xu introduced the types of psychological crisis in detail with examples, and shared with the students the methods of discovering, checking and dealing with psychological crisis. The lecture provided the new students with great help to adapt to the unfamiliar environment on new campus and the psychological impact brought by Covid-19 as soon as possible.
On that afternoon, the fresh-senior student exchange meeting was in Room U102 of the Comprehensive Building. The meeting was held by the SU. Four year 2020 entering students were invited to share their experience in study, life, internship and employment to the new students from different research interests and education systems. Liu Yiman, a year 2018 entering student (Sino-American), made a detailed introduction to the study planning and internship of postgraduates, and encouraged the students to reap what they sow. Deng Haoyuan, a year 2018 entering student (Sino-German), shared exam-taking experience of test DaF including time arrangement and test-taking skills. Wang Ning, a year 2019 entering student (Sino-American), introduced the two-year postgraduate programme and expressed her personal feelings about the life of being a postgraduate Yao Xizeng, a year 2019 entering student (Law of Different Countries), shared the teaching characteristics of laws of different countries, and the employment and internship of this research interest. This meeting provided students from all entering years a good platform to exchange with each other and help new students to adapt to the postgraduate life as soon as possible, while offering a clear orientation and goals for their study and life at the college.
The Orientation came to a successful conclusion after the series of activities.
