The College launched a series of activities to welcome year 2023 entering students from 28 August to 1 September, 2023. In light of the arrangement of the University and the actual situation the College, the College carried out an orientation week to welcome new students, including the enrollment, the deans’ visit to student accommodation, the temporary conveners’ meeting of new students, the opening ceremony & the teacher-student meeting, the orientation for new students, the fresh-senior student meeting and the lecture on mental health.
Under the leadership of the administrative office, the College Student Union set up a ‘one-stop’ orientation booth in the hall of the ground floor of the Research Building on 28 August, organizing the new students to complete the enrollment process in an orderly manner in accordance with steps including ID verification, materials receiving and materials distribution.
On the morning of 29 August, the deans of the College visited the new students in their residents. They exchanged views on their life and study with the students after they arrived at the college, and responded to the students’ problems and difficulties in a timely manner. They also stressed the dormitory security.
On the afternoon of 29 August, the College held a temporary conveners' meeting of new students. Chair of the College Council Wang Fang, Liu Ming and Zhou Fangzheng from the College Administrative Office attended the meeting. Student Tutor Yang Mingquan moderated the meeting. The teachers introduced the schedule of the Orientation Week to the conveners to ensure the success of the activities.
On the morning of 31 August, the Opening Ceremony for Year 2021 Entering Students of the College was held. Members of the college leadership team, the entire faculty in Beijing, outstanding alumni representatives, student representatives, as well as all the class of 2023 freshmen attended the meeting. Wang Fang presided over the ceremony.
At the ceremony, A/Prof. Che Hu, as the teacher's representative, first gave a speech. He extended warm welcome and congratulations to the new students, and then put forward some valuable suggestions, such as learning comparative method in a systematic way, hoping that students could contribute to national rejuvenation and national construction.
Subsequently, Legal Director of the Beijing Finance Street Investment Group Mr. Liu Anpeng, as a representative of outstanding alumni, shared his personal experience in witnessing the development of the college, as well as his own study, job-hunting and work experience with key words "truth comes from comparison". He suggested that students build a solid professional foundation, a personal value system and a cognitive system and spend their postgraduate life seriously.
On behalf of the class of 2022, student Li Xingtong wished the new students spiritual independence and freedom and a high morality. Later, on behalf of the Class 2023, new student Chang Jianing expressed his desire from postgraduate study and his views on responsibility, accumulation and pragmatism. that all coursemates could learn something and gain something.
Finally, Dean of the College Prof. Xie Zhiyong delivered a speech. He briefly introduced the development trend of the college in recent years, and advised students to consolidate their study foundation, so as to shape their thinking through reading and writing while maintaining physical and mental health. He hoped that the faculty and students would join hands and be united in their efforts to live up to the times, to take advantage of the situation, to make a difference and to make due contribution to the development of comparative law, the development of law and the progress of the rule of law in China.
After the ceremony, the college held a meeting between teachers and new students. Each institute organised educational activities for their students and introduced the members and characteristics of the institutes in detail. The two parties got familiar with each other during the Q&A section.
On the afternoon of 31 August, the orientation for new students was held. Staff from the College Administrative Office Li Li, Yang Mingquan and Sun Yang attended the meeting. Liu Ming moderated the meeting.
Liu first introduced the history and development of the college and introduced the main situation of the German exchange programme to the students. Sun introduced the College's training programme as well as the selection of modules and other requirements in-detail. Li introduced the College's international programmes with the US, Germany, Australia and other countries. Yang introduced the history of the University, the guide to use the University’s official website and internal system, the contact information of departments and the emergency response, and presented a detailed explanation on the management of student status, scholarships and awards, internship and employment, class management and relevant content.
On the morning of 1 September, A/Prof. Xu Jingjing from the Mental Health Education and Consultation Centre of the University was invited as the keynote speaker to give a lecture on mental health. Starting from the recent campus events in the US, Xu vividly introduced the current situation of the mental health of teachers and students, popularised the knowledge of mental health interactively, and emphasised the information of help-seeking methods, consultation channels and medical treatment choices. The lecture helped the new students further absorb the mental health knowledge and promote the ability to deal with mental issues.
On the evening of 1 September, the SU held an exchange meeting for new and old students. Five year 2022 entering students Lian Weiqian, Guo Ziyue, Zhang Bolun, Shan Yimin, Wang Yilin were invited to share their experience in study, life, internship and employment with the new students.
Lian introduced the timeline of postgraduate study in detail and shared her experience in academic planning and thesis writing. She warned the freshers, especially those are doing 2-year programme, to plan ahead. Guo focused on German learning, introducing the contents of the Sino-German programme and her experiences and lessons in vocabulary, writing, listening and speaking, and hoped that new students could maintain a sound state of mind and hold a firm goal. Zhang shared the experience of exchange in Japan, introduced points for attention on the information collection, application process, overseas study and life. Shan shared her views on module selection, and gave a detailed introduction to the specialty features and learning arrangements of laws of different countries programme. Wang shared the curriculum of the China-America programme and introduced her experience in various innovative entrepreneurship and exchange programmes, as well as student work and internship.
The orientation week came to a successful conclusion after the series of activities.
